We need to cherish the songs that brought us to where we are. Hymns, spirituals, anthems, and gospel are in our musical DNA. Hope, faith, justice, love, deliverance, and confession are needed in the songs written today for a time such as this. Early 20th century gospel music reminds me of hot grits on a cold winter day. They got inside of you, stuck to your ribs, and kept you full. I miss that in the music I hear today.

Gospel music has grown and evolved over its roughly 100 year history. Gospel hymns were first composed in the late 19th century by pastors such as Rev. Albert Tindley, but received widespread acclaim after the ground roots organizing of Professor Thomas A. Dorsey and his Dorsey disciples.

Those songs, as Dr. Margaret Douroux explained- in an interview in "Make A Joyful Noise: A Brief History of Gospel Music Ministry in America" (2011), were hummed by our ancestors as they performed day work to support their families. They were lined in devotion and prayer meetings. They were sung at funerals and baptisms.

We're starving from the gospel music of the 21st century. It's fattening; sweet; foot-tapping, hip-swaying good. But- how long does it last? Does it keep you full? Does it edify? exhort? convict? deliver? Is it sounding brass and tinkling cymbal?

Katelyn won both awards.

Katelyn was both a presenter and recipient at the inaugural awards show. As a presenter, she announced the nominees and winner for the Christian / Gospel Male Vocalist of the Year and presented the award to Christian recording artist, J. Douglas Wright. http://www.jdouglaswright.com
The next category up was Christian / Gospel Entertainer of the Year and a very surprised McCarter heard her name announced as the overall winner by presenter Jenny Holmes. After a musical performance by J. Douglas Wright, Katelyn was once again surprised to be announced as the winner of the Christian / Gospel Female Vocalist of the Year by presenter J. Douglas Wright.

Later that evening it was announced that Dreamin’ Out Loud Entertainment had been selected as the winner in the category of Record Label of the Year. That award was also accepted by McCarter.

Someone once asked me, "What is a Music Producer?", So I thought about it and found that I didn't have a single answer to this question at that time. Hopefully this article will answer this question:

A record producer is an individual working within the music industry, whose job it is to oversee and manage the recording (i.e. “production”) of an artist’s music. A producer has many roles that may include, but are not limited to, gathering ideas for the project, selecting songs and/or musicians, coaching the artist and musicians in the studio, controlling the recording sessions, and supervising the entire process through mixing and mastering. Producers also often take on a wider entrepreneurial role, with responsibility for the budget, schedules, and negotiations.

Today, the recording industry has two kinds of producers: executive producer and music producer; they have different roles. While an executive producer oversees a project’s finances, a music producer oversees the creation of the music.

A music producer can, in some cases, be compared to a film director, with noted practitioner Phil Ek himself describing his role as “the person who creatively guides or directs the process of making a record, like a director would a movie. The engineer would be more the cameraman of the movie.” The music producer’s job is to create, shape, and mold a piece of music. The scope of responsibility may be one or two songs or an artist’s entire album – in which case the producer will typically develop an overall vision for the album and how the various songs may interrelate.

In the UK, before the rise of the record producer, someone from A&R would oversee the recording session(s), assuming responsibility for creative decisions relating to the recording.

At Whitney Houston’s funeral, Actor Kevin Costner said at “The Bodyguard” audition, she didn’t feel that she was good enough and/or pretty enough to get the part. He said because of her insecurity regarding her looks that she went in the back and put on more make-up and that it smeared down her face because of the hot lights.

And since her death, some people have been talking about how could such a talented, beautiful woman be insecure about who she was?

Fondrea before we discuss your music, you are a minister of the Gospel first. Please share with our listeners, when did you decide to preach the Gospel?

I knew that I was called to preach at 17, but I didn’t actually submit to that idea until I was about 23 years old.

My sister, you are exciting, powerful and full of life. I have seen some of your live performances on YouTube, and they are just beautiful. You’re not only an excellent vocalist, but you have also directed award-winning choirs as well.

What are some of the challenges being a solo artist present? Which do you find more challenging, being a choir director or a solo artist?

Answer Fondrea Lewis:

Well I am actually a new solo “artist” per say, so I am not sure what kinds of challenges I will be up against. I just listen to the experiences of my friends who are solo artists and try to get an idea. I can imagine that one major difference is that you have to deal with less attitudes and agendas as a solo artist and with a choir directress you have to try to make voices blend, attitudes mesh, schedules match, outfits come together and the list goes on and on! With one person those kinds of decisions are much easier to make, but I love both of those areas of ministry I was just ready to experience another avenue. I have 18 years of experience being a choir directress. I was just ready for something new! Maybe I will be able to answer that question differently after a few years of being a solo artist. We’ll see how long I last……LOL

The music video for “Sweeter” from the “I believe God” album is one of the coolest and just relaxing music videos I’ve seen in awhile. When I say cool, to me the feeling I get is just that everyday vibe. You know, I can truly relate with the environment and peace in the video.

What was your inspiration behind the song “Sweeter?”

Answer Fondrea Lewis:

Thank you so much, I love the video as well, And that was the idea behind the video which was directed by George Searight Jr.

That song was actually written by my 19-year-old daughter Kayla who you see there in the video with me. (Smile) She is an amazing songwriter, musician and singer who happen to have her own relationship with God. She came in my room one morning at about 2a.m. and said “Mom tell me what you think” and immediately I fell in love with the song and I asked her if I ever recorded could I put that song on my album? She said really? I don’t think it’s good enough and said let me worry about that because I LOVE IT!!!! So there you have it! Maybe soon you will be interviewing her alone. This Girl has a bright future!!!!

Fondrea, I don’t want to be a spoiler, but your album has a lot to offer the listener. What is your favorite song on the CD and why?

Answer Fondrea Lewis:

I do happen to love all of the songs but my actual favorite song is “I cried to the Lord” because it is the song that the Lord gave to me. I appreciate all of the other writers but that song was birthed from my personal experience with God.

Thank You For Supporting My Trip To Ghana WOW!  God took me across the sea to show me some things.  I've experienced so much in just the little bit of time I was there.  It was an honor to meet Bishops, Pastors, and Clergy from all over the world. I truly thank God for divine connections, as many were established! There was one instance where I was singing in the foyer of a church that had burned down...and I could hear the Holy Spirit saying...nothing will stop them from assembling to honor and learn from the Most High.  He encouraged me to continue to cultivate the same mindset. I truly appreciate being born in the United States.  What we consider basic amenities (clean water/restrooms/malls/paved roads/street signs/stoplights) are delicacies within Accra.  As I experienced praise and worship with a people that truly hunger, and thirst for God, I also experienced a part of the world that wasn't aware that "better" existed, and if they did, there was no infrastructure or consistency put in place for them to obtain it.  Jobs were scarce, and I witnessed a strong, prideful people that literally did what it took to ensure their families were provided for...which leads me to my visit to Dr. Charles Abban's Rock Hospital. The Rock Hospital was an event/visit that I will never forget.  It was like I was inserted into a time portal taking me back 30 years. Specializing in patients being challenged with HIV/AIDS, I was able to encourage and pray with several patients.  Although heartbroken, I felt really good when we left because they were smiling!  I was privy to tour the juvenile prison system, and LET ME JUST SAY THAT our system is like a 5-star resort compared to what the inmates have to endure in Accra. NicoisMUSIC plans to fully support Madam Abena Asomaning, of the Angel-Zoe foundation in assisting the Ghana Prisons service.   We are working with Ms. Asomaning to obtain a wish list to provide materials for their programs to help prepare the inmates via a trade (i.e. mechanic, sowing, carpentry) when they are released.  While receiving a humanitarian award from Dr. Abban for my contribution to the kingdom I could hear God whisper in my ear  (my husband and mother provided confirmation)....GET READY...GET READY....GET READY...I have so much more in store for the Christ in you! I've already been invited to next year's International Clergy event which will take place in London.  I desire to have all of NicoisMUSIC (band) accompany me this time.  I will continue to declare that we will all speak to nations on God's behalf!  I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you that prayed, interceded, and financially provided a way for NicoisMUSIC to present Christ to Accra, Ghana.  Was this trip overwhelming...YES...Will I go back....ABSOLUTELY!  Forever Melodious Nicois Take a look at video of the trip...
