The 7 essential things to do in Newcastle

New castle in Trip UK posted April 30, 2020

Visit Newcastle: what are the best things to do and see in the city of Geordies?

Newcastle upon Tyne is a city in the north-east of England with a population of approximately 270,000. The city is located between Edinburgh in Scotland and London. It is known around the world for its football team and for the special accent of its inhabitants, named the Geordies!

The origins of Newcastle date back more than 2,000 years. At the time, the Romans had built an imposing fort there to protect their empire. Years later, the industrial revolution allowed Newcastle to develop actively. The economy was then centred around the steel and coal trade. One of the largest production centres in the world, Newcastle quickly became a rich and attractive city, establishing itself as one of the most important in England.

Today, the city has evolved into a modern, artistic and lively metropolis. Its often original architecture and its museums make it a cultural city in which there is a warm atmosphere. It was also named European Capital of Culture in 2008.

Are you planning to visit Newcastle upon Tyne and wonder what you can discover in this British city? Here is a selection of 7 essentials to visit during your trip.

  1. Castle Keep

What would a visit to Newcastle be without going through the "new castle" to which the city owes its name? The discovery of Newcastle Castle and its keep, which dates back to 1178, is possible every day. You can observe a panoramic view of the whole city.

Children's tours are also planned, with re-enactments and costumed guides. Its Norman stone architecture and fun tours make this site an unmissable point of interest in the city. You don't know what to do in Newcastle when you arrive? So don't miss the Castle Keep.

  1. The banks of the Tyne

Sure, visiting the quays along the River Tyne is a must to visit Newcastle. On Sundays, you will find a market for clothes, antiques and art called Quayside.

You can also take a stroll along the quays to discover the modern architecture of this area of Newcastle. Among the highlights of the panorama, there is, of course, the Millenium Bridge. This pedestrian bridge was built in 2000. It is the first in the world to use a side rotation system to let boats through. This spectacle, which lasts about 4 minutes, makes it very popular with travellers, as does its colourful illumination at night.

  1. Downtown

The heart of Newcastle is bustling with its many shops and restaurants. Neoclassical architecture is very present, especially in Gray Street, often considered one of the most beautiful in England. In the evening, you will discover the hectic atmosphere of a university and cultural city. You will quickly realize this: Newcastle is a festive city!

It is also a student city that hosts a very famous university in England, founded in 1834. It is separated into three faculties: medicine, humanities and social sciences and science. Visiting the campus and its period building is very interesting to discover.

Book your train to Newcastle

  1. BALTIC Museum of Contemporary Art

The BALTIC museum, located on the banks of the Tyne, is considered an emblem of the city’s modern architecture. BALTIC is one of the largest museums of contemporary art in the world.

His particularity? There is no permanent gallery. This museum hosts constantly renewed exhibitions, as well as numerous events where influential personalities from the artistic world express themselves. BALTIC is a museum to discover without hesitation if you are looking for what to do in Newcastle. There is also a gourmet restaurant with a breathtaking view of the Tyne River!

  1. Sage Gateshead

You can't miss this peculiarly shaped building when you visit the banks of the Tyne in Newcastle. It is on the Gateshead side, and you will definitely have to take the Millennium Bridge to get a closer look.

Opened in 2004, The Sage is actually a performance hall, which has been ranked among the best in the world. Its curved glass and steel design can be enjoyed from the outside as well as from the inside. Indeed, it allows you to enjoy exceptional acoustic performance. There are three different stages, which allows the Sage to offer hundreds of concerts each year.

The biggest stars of the song are regularly there. So, if you don't know what to do in Newcastle to occupy your evenings, you can find out about the concerts planned during your stay. The opportunity to live amazing sound experience.

  1. The Angel of the North

Angel of the North is a sculpture created by artist Sir Antony Gormley in 1998. It stands 20m high and is 54m wide. Designed as a kind of totem, this work has become the emblem of the city of Gateshead.

It is located on Birtley Hill, above the city centre. Built exclusively of steel, the structure withstands the sometimes complicated weather conditions in England, and it seems that we come to admire it a little for this reason too… It represents the transition from the industrial era to the era of information and marks the evolution of the Newcastle-Gateshead region.

  1. Things to see and do in Newcastle

St James' Park stadium: Going to a game in Newcastle is the best way to soak up the bustling city.

Gateshead: Gateshead town centre is great to explore for half a day.

The North Sea: You can get to South Shields by tube and take a stroll by the sea to experience a peaceful country feel, very close to Newcastle.

Sunderland: The small town of Sunderland, connected by the Newcastle underground, is best known for its football team but also has a lot of charm.

Grainger Market: The Grainger Market is a covered market where you can come to eat, buy fresh products or simply visit the many small shops! A must when visiting Newcastle.

Q&A With Hana Fujisaki

IMG_20190712_162443_450%2B%25282%2529.jpg

1. Where are we talking from today?

A. R&B/Soul performance at Reggie's.

2. Where did you get your artist name from?

A. Mom and dad - aka my real name.

3. Music wise what are you working on now? Are you currently promoting a single or album?

A. I play the keyboard with Brandon James and McNary Experience, both are R&B/Soul based band and have lots of cool projects going on that I'm a part of. Brandon James released his single "So Emotional" on all platforms along with the music video. McNary Experience completed three Aretha Franklin Tribute shows this year, which we plan on taking on a road next year.

4. Who or what were the most significant influences on your musical life and career?

A. I grew up listening to big band jazz like Buddy Rich Band and mimicking their sound and harmony on the keyboard. I was in my third grade or so when I was doing that but I still think that led to what I do now.

5. Who are your favorite musicians?

A. Brad Mehldau, Fred Hersch, Esperanza Spalding, Earth Wind and Fire

6. What have been the greatest challenges/frustrations of your career so far?

A. Not falling into my own comfort zone musically. I should never stop discovering new artists and should keep absorbing, experimenting, but after a certain point it's easy to fall into a pattern when playing or writing music without clear intention.

7. As a musician, what is your definition of success?

A. Being creative at all time - not seized by the ideas of being trendy or accepted.  To me the successful musicians are the ones that are constantly making the art that the artists themselves want to really make.

8. What is your idea of perfect happiness?

A. Being surrounded by the things and people I love and care.

9. What is your present state of mind?

A. Grateful for all the musical opportunities in the past year and truly amazing, supportive musical community I have here in the U.S.

10. What is your most treasured possession?

A. My gears. I need them haha

11. What do you enjoy doing most?

A. Playing music or listening to music! I don't mean to be cheezy or anything but be it on the stage or in my bedroom, there are moments of sheer joy linking with the sound you like.

12. Where would you like to be in 10 years’ time?

A. Not sure of the exact location but still making music wherever I may be.
I would like to keep writing my own music and eventually have all that together as a product that I can be proud of and share with larger audience too.

1. Where are we talking from today?

A. I currently live in Jamaica Queens.

2. What would you like to accomplish in 2019?

A. I will like to connect with a team and label that gets my sound and art. Begin my album,
release it by November and Start touring by the beginning of 2020. You got to be
specific and set your goals and intentions. That’s my philosophy in 2019.

3. What is your take on politics?

A. I always remember what my 8th grade history teacher said, “You picking the lesser of
two evils.” For example, in the last election, who you rather Hillary who has hot sauce in her
bag and can’t email properly or Donald J. Trump who’s grabbing women by their
genitals and making America great again on Twitter(wink wink). I think politics are great
but I leave that to your own personal preference. Freedom and equality is what I stand for no matter the race, color, religion, etc.

4. Where did you get your artist name from?

A. My full name is Lawrence Artis, Jr. My friend who was smoking the green earth as we
were chilling says, “You should make your stage name Law...it’s the Law now drop it!” I
went with it and it stuck. It’s basically a shorter version of my birth name.

5. Growing up, how important has music been in your life? Can you recall the moment
when you decided that you wanted to be a musician? Was it an easy or difficult choice to make?

A. Music was my everything! I wanted to sing like my Grandparents who are both very
good singer. R.I.P. Pop-Pop. I knew I wanted to be a musician when I wrote my first
song at 10 years old. My cousin who was a wonderful vocalist, we had a childhood
group called Double L and we sang at a banquet. I remember thinking I want this to be
like this for the rest of my life. It was easy until I hit 18. Everything became so much
harder. Where am I going to get the money to finance these dreams? Many people kept
telling me to find a backup plan. That’s not what God is saying in my heart. It was a struggle to find balance, and peace in this artistic journey.

6. Was there ever a time when you thought about doing something else? If you weren’t a musician today, what could you see yourself doing?

A. Are you kidding me...I’m the king of back up plans. I have been a deli worker, call
center rep, bank teller, paperboy, college student worker, and a soldier. If I wasn’t doing music today. I would continue my education and become a professor for the arts.

7. What has been the biggest surprise so far about making music your career? What has been an unexpected or welcome challenge to it all?

A. The biggest surprise is how easy it is for me to record my song and write lyrics. It’s like
breathing to me. I hadn’t been in a studio in 5 years and decided to just go for it. I had to
write the songs before the studio session. My producer Ian Litovich just went with the
flow. I don’t like to waste time. We knocked out a song a day and no more than an 8-hour
session. The hardest challenge was the visuals, writing the treatments and explaining
my vision to the directors. Sometimes people come with their own agenda and you got to give them room to express but not take over your vision.

8. What was it like putting together your EP?

A. It was so organic. I loved it! I enjoyed really digging into my creative place. I was so free
from my insecurities. I was doing ME and that felt good. Talking about things that
people don’t always sing about and not caring. That’s revolutionary for me!

9. Who are some of your favorite artists or rather, what musicians have continued to
inspire you and your music? Who would you absolutely still love to work within  ?

A. Favorite Artist are Janet Jackson, Lady Gaga, Brandy, Babyface, Toni
Braxton...(basically anybody in the ’90s) Artist that inspire me is different, these artists I
can see myself in their reflection: Kelis, Pink, Lenny Kravitz, Bill Withers, Bjork, Grace
Jones, and Macy Gray. I would love to work with my Cancer sis Solange, Dawn Richard and Lion’s Babe.

10. What has it been like keeping up with your social media accounts and all of the
different platforms? Is it hard to stay up to date on it all? What would you say is your favorite way to connect with your fans now?

A. I’m a private person and will always be. I’m only on Twitter and YouTube It keeps me
sane and focused on my mission in life. I like to keep my peace and my humans(my
fans) know me and I speak with a purpose or there is no reason to speak at all.

11. If you were going to be stranded on a deserted island, what musical item would you take with you and why?

A. I would take a recorder and a pencil and paper. I’m about to write one of the dopest album on this island. Law Artis: The lost files...I’m already marketing it. lol

12. If your music was going to be featured on any TV show that is currently on right
now, which would you love it to be on? Or if you prefer, what is a movie that you love
that you wish your music was featured in?

A. This current EP, I would say Grey’s Anatomy because this music is full of mood, love, and drama. That’s definitely the Grey’s Anatomy series.

13. At the end of the day, what do you hope people take away from your music?

A. I hope people will become more transparent in themselves. Live in their truth with no
apologies. Just know you are not alone, we all got stuff, but it’s how you take that stuff and make it gold. It’s your life...do what you will :-)

14. When you are not making music what else do you enjoy to do?

A. Acting, Dancing, and watching art and tennis. I see a concert and a Broadway show once a month. I’m at a movie once a week.

1. Where are we talking from today?

A. I am from Chicago originally but Florida currently has my heart.

2. Where did you get your artist name from?

A. Well, I went through maybe 3-4 name ideas but I ultimately went with the name I was born with, Dahshanae. It felt the most right and really further pushed the motive of truly showing my audience who I am.

3. Music wise what are you working on right now? Are you currently promoting a single or album?

A. I just finished working on my first mixtape, "Relapse" and it is truly my most personal project yet. "Relapse" will be available on all platforms June 17th and the first single and visual from the project, "R.I.A" will be out April 19th followed by a few more really amazing releases so I'm very excited about it.  I found my sound while writing this project. I learned so much about myself and what is and isn't love through this project. More importantly, I learned how to accept my flaws and to take everything that I've learned to make better decisions in life and hopefully be a beacon for others that hear this project and relate to it in some way to help them understand that repeated behavior will have the repeated results.

4. Who or what were the most significant influences on your musical life and career?

A. I would say who inspired me most was definitely Janet Jackson and Beyoncé. I was literally 4 years old staring at my TV studying Janet Jackson's music video choreography until I had it completely down packed. Same with Beyoncé as I got older. I've just always been obsessed with their confidence, their creativity, their drive. Everything they did was completely genius and legendary and I think myself as well as many girls growing up saw that as an example of true brilliance. When I got more so into my teens, I got into Erykah Badu and fell in love with her voice and her vision. I would say I definitely look up to so many strong women that inspire me to be the artist that I am today.

5. Who are your favorite musicians?

A. I love so many artists and I'm always finding new ones to add to the already long list of my favs but off the top of my head, I'd say Jessie Reyez, Mickey Shiloh, Chloe X Halle, Jhene Aiko, Erykah Badu, Nicki Minaj, and Ariana Grande.

IMG_0363%2B%25281%2529.jpg

6. What have been the greatest challenges/frustrations of your career so far?

A. My greatest challenges have definitely been feeling unsure of myself and allowing others to make me feel unsure of myself when I am confident in something. I'm a Libra so I'm already very indecisive by nature so getting to a point where I'm completely happy with something can be a long process and can become an even longer process when I have other people in my ear telling me they don't like something I do and that I should do this instead than someone coming behind them and saying they don't like that. I kind of had to come to the realization that not everyone is going to like everything I do and no matter how hard I try, you simply can not please everyone. I had to give myself a mini pep one day and tell myself that I got this and to just go with my gut and that has definitely helped me overcome some of my self-doubts.

7. As a musician, what is your definition of success?

A. Being a musician, many people would say success is selling out shows, getting a #1 on Billboard, and having millions of dollars. Don't get more wrong, I think those things can play a factor in the look of success but I'm more worried about the feel of success. Being able to connect with your audience through your music is huge to me because there are so many people around the world going through things and always have that feeling that it's just them feeling crappy or low key weird or whatever is it. With my music I want my audience to see that they are not alone so people messaging me or coming to my shows saying that one of my songs made them feel better about their situation or made them feel empowered then that means true success to me.

8. What is your idea of perfect happiness?

A. My idea of perfect happiness is being able to create art. Rather it's music, visuals, performances, paintings, etc. As long as I'm creating freely and being able to fully express myself through my art, that is the definition of a happy Dahshanae. Well...that and food.

9. What is your present state of mind?

A. My present state of mind is solely on making my mark. I remember seeing something Left Eye from TLC said in an interview and it really stuck with me. She said that if you can see something you want in your head clear as day, then it is possible. When you believe in it, It starts manifesting into reality. For me, always believing in myself and keeping the doubters far away from my creative thought process and execution is key.

10. What is your most treasured possession?

A. My most treasured possession is hands down my laptop. I feel like my entire life is on it so I'm super protective over it. You can take away my entire studio but as long as I got my laptop, I'm good.

11. What do you enjoy doing most?

A. I enjoy being in my studio from sun up to sun down just writing. For my "Relapse" project, in particular, I really freestyle many of the songs and now it is probably one of my favorite ways to create. You never really know what you're going say so sometimes the melody is everything but I have to go in a switch a few words around and sometimes the melody and the lyrics just fit so perfectly that I leave it alone so it's a pretty interesting process for me.

12. Where would you like to be in 10 years’ time?

A. In 10 years, my only real goal is to be happy and to continue to make music that makes people feel human and inspire them to be unapologetic.

13. Where you @ online?

A. You can find me on all social media platforms @IamDahshanae

TIM TEBOW FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NEW LEADERSHIP

Press Release: Jacksonville, FL (Wednesday, April 4, 2018) – The Tim Tebow Foundation (TTF) announced today that they have hired a new president to lead the organization. The non-profit, now in its eighth year of service to children all over the world, has welcomed Steve Biondo, formerly a senior-level executive at Family Christian Resource Centers, to take on oversight of the day-to-day operations of the foundation, which will continue headstrong in its mission to bring Faith, Hope and Love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need.

Since being founded in 2010 by professional athlete and sports analyst, Tim Tebow, TTF has established a reputation as an advocate for people with special needs and those in need through several main areas of ministry, most recently Night to Shine, their worldwide prom for people with special needs which began in 2015. This year’s Night to Shine event brought together 150,000 volunteers from 537 churches across the nation and in 16 countries to celebrate 90,000 honored guests on February 9, 2018, all of whom were crowned King or Queen of the prom. The foundation has also provided more than 2,000 life-changing surgical procedures to children of the Philippines who could not otherwise afford care at the Tebow CURE Hospital, built nine Timmy’s Playrooms in children’s hospitals around the world, fulfilled the dreams of more than 75 children with life-threatening illnesses through the W15H program and created hundreds of Brighter Days, supported life’s essentials for orphans in four countries and provided 76 Adoption Aid grants to families making the courageous choice to adopt a child with special needs internationally, 69 of whom are already home with their forever families.

“We are excited for Steve to be joining the team and look forward to seeing how God is going to use him to love and serve children all over the world. I know there are huge things in store in this new season at TTF under Steve’s leadership and direction,” shared Tim Tebow, founder and chairman of the Tim Tebow Foundation. “The board and I were prayerful and diligent in making sure we selected the absolute best candidate for the role, Steve is someone who already has a heart for the work that we do.”

Biondo’s experience most recently includes the start-up and growth of a non-profit ministry which impacted 14 million orphans, widows and oppressed children over the past 10 years, Human Resources leadership of more than 4,200 employees in 37 states and strategic planning and organizational development.

“I am beyond blessed to have the opportunity to lead this great organization and look forward to deepening and broadening the ways we fight for those who can’t fight for themselves,” shared Steve Biondo, TTF’s new president. “It is an honor to join Timmy and the rest of the team and to be able to be part of making an impact on the lives of children in need around the world. The Tim Tebow Foundation has big things ahead and I am excited to lead the organization into this next chapter.”

Biondo replaces Erik Dellenback, the foundation’s first executive director, following seven successful years leading TTF’s outreach efforts.

Having just experienced another hugely successful Night to Shine event all over the world on February 9, and having raised the most funds to-date at their annual marquee fundraising weekend in March, the foundation sits poised to continue its God-sized growth and continue serving thousands more children around the globe. Making my 'Write' Affirmations

Hopefully, it’s not too late for me to make my writing affirmations for the year. I’m purposely not calling them resolutions because I want something “affirming.” So much of writing begins with your state of mind (see my previous 2 most recent blogs)

I’ve decided to keep it simple.

        Here goes:

1.      I will write consistently, whether it’s journaling, blogging or novel writing

2.      I will read about writing so I can get better. One good source: Better English 101

3.      I will “commune” with other writers.

4.      I will write my ideas down so I don’t forget them.

5.      I will look for new places to showcase my writing.

6.      I will be a prolific writer.

7.      I will copyright my work.

8.      I will be encouraged by the writers who are already successful.

9.      I will not be discouraged by those who reject my writing.

10.  I will believe in the uniqueness of the writing gift God has given me.
