Step Four: Phone positioning and power on

The camera of your phone should always be on the left side of the gimbal. The easiest way to get this right is to confirm the device mount is in its locked position (rotated fully counter clockwise) and then place your smartphone into the mount with the back camera away from you and towards the handle

Rotate your smartphone 90º clockwise and then adjust the phone’s position laterally so that it self-balances (this isn’t technically necessary, but a balanced position will decrease balance adjustments and increase battery life)

Launch the ZY Cami app on your smartphone

While holding the handle, press and hold the power button on the gimbal with your other hand(each of the 4 LEDs will light in sequence before powering on)

Follow Bluetooth pairing prompts and connection info on the screen. The initial pairing has an extra step or two, but it auto pairs after that.

Performance

The coolest part of the Smooth X for me is its compact size. It easily fits in a pocket and the controls are positioned so that it won’t accidentally turn on. The trickiest part is definitely learning the unfolding and folding setup, which has just enough steps that it’s a good four or five times to start feeling automatic.

Using the gimbal also has a bit of a learning curve, but it’s a pretty quick study. If you haven’t used a gimbal before, here’s what you need to know. This is a 2-axis gimbal so it can control the left/right and horizon rotation. Up/down tilt is up to you either using your wrist or the hinge position on the extension.

The Smooth X responds to your hand motion if unlocked, or will keep your phone isolated if you have activated the axis locks. There are scenarios where any and all of these make sense so it’s best to play around to learn what does and doesn’t work for you.

Once set up and powered on, here are the main controls you’ll want to use.

The shutter button has multiple functions

1x press takes a picture or starts/stops recording depending on your camera mode

2x press switches between photo and video modes

3x press switches between front and rear camera

The joystick manually controls your phone orientation

Left and right will turn your phone left or right

Up and down rotate your phone clockwise or counter clockwise

Both of those can be inverted in the app if you desire

The M button has many functions and can be customized in the ZY Cami app, but here are the main ones…

1x press locks and unlocks the pan follow mode so rotating the handle will not turn your phone. Locked shows solid blue LED. Unlocked is single blink LED.

4x press enters roll and pan follow mode, 1x press exits back to pan follow mode. Roll and Pan shows a double blink LED.

2x press rotates between landscape and portrait modes quickly. This is useful, but note switching during a video will result in sideways video for the mode you’ve switched into.

3x press re-centers the stabilizer

The zoom slider will remotely zoom in and out

The Smooth X gimbal will work without downloading the ZY Cami app, but you’ll be missing out on a bunch of features like zoom, camera mode switching, auto-panorama and my favorite, the tracking mode.

The tracking mode is activated in the ZY Cami app by toggling the gesture button ON. A “stop” hand gesture creates the focal point to track and also starts recording. If you’re using the selfie camera you can hold your hand in front of your face. If you’re filming someone else you can have them do it. The app will start recording and the gimbal will automatically track your subject keeping it in the center of the frame. This is perfect for vlogging and in conjunction with the tripod you’d be able to have it follow your hands on an assembly walk through as well. Here’s a quick video of the tracking function, including the end where you can see me forgetting I can stop from the handle and instead reaching for the phone.

The auto-panorama works like it sounds. Place the ZY Cami app in panorama mode and aim your phone at the center of the shot you want. When you click the shutter button, the camera rotates to the far left and starts a series of 8 photos with partial rotation between and then stitches them all together.

It’s pretty handy and a little easier than trying to keep the vertical alignment while using the stock Apple panorama mode.

There’s a lot of filters and other app features that I didn’t really dive into as the hardware is really what captivated me. Overall the build quality is great. The extension is handy when you need some reach or height to get over anything blocking your view.

The ergonomics of the handle and controls are pretty solid with the exception of the zoom slider which requires an awkward back and right reach. Feels like it might be slightly better for left handers.

It’s better if I switch my grip to hold lower, but phones are not cheap so I want to hold on securely and that feels a bit dicey. It’s also a very smooth slider switch and would benefit from some ridges for traction.

From a protection standpoint, your phone is pretty exposed. The Smooth X allows room for some slim cases, but bulkier ones will not work. You’ll also need to experiment a bit to find the balanced position for your phone that doesn’t result in the mount pressing buttons. Tip: the balance point isn’t always centered due to the camera and battery weights and placements.

The tripod stand is sturdy but the hinge on the gimbal only allows to tilt the screen down, not the rear facing camera, limiting its usefulness.

How to use a scanner

(1) Determine the appropriate scanning mode

(2) Optimizing scanner resolution

The higher the scan resolution is, the clearer the image is. However, considering that if the resolution of the output device is exceeded, it is impossible to print a clearer image. For example, prepare to use a 600dpi resolution printer to output the results and scan at 600dpi. If possible, scale down large images after scanning. (3) Set the scanning parameters

When a scanner pre-scans an image, it scans according to the system default scanning parameter values. For different scanning objects and different scanning methods, the effect may be different. Therefore, in order to obtain higher image scanning quality, the parameters can be adjusted manually. For example, when the brightness of grayscale and color images is too bright or too dark, the brightness can be changed by dragging the slider on the brightness slide bar. If the brightness is too high, the image will look white. If the brightness is too low, it is too dark. The brightness of the image should be moderate when dragging the brightness slider. Similarly, for other parameters, local modifications can be made according to the same adjustment method until their visual effects are satisfactory. In a word, a good scanned image can meet the printing output without further adjustment in the image processing software and is closest to the printing quality..

(4) Set the file size

No matter whether the scanned object is text, image, or photo, it is an image after being output by the scanner, and the size of the image is directly related to the size of the file capacity, so the size of the file should be set during scanning. Usually, the scanner can automatically calculate the file size when previewing the original manuscript sample, but knowing how to calculate the file size is more helpful for you to make appropriate choices when managing scanning files and determining the scan resolution. The calculation formula of the binary image file is horizontal dimension x vertical dimension x (scan resolution) 2/8. The calculation formula of the color image file is horizontal dimension x vertical dimension x (scan resolution) 2×3.

At present, there are three kinds of projection technology: CRT, LCD, and DLP.

CRT projector is the earliest projection technology, which is similar to the CRT display. It has the advantages of long life, rich color display, good reducibility, and rich ability to adjust geometric distortion. Contrast is very important to the visual effect. Generally speaking, the larger the contrast is the clearer the image is, and the brighter the color is. However, if the contrast is small, the whole picture will be gray. High contrast is very helpful for the clarity, detail, and gray level of the image. High contrast has advantages in black-and-white contrast, clarity, integrity, and so on. Relatively speaking, in the aspect of the color level, the influence of high contrast on an image is not obvious. The contrast has a greater impact on the dynamic video display effect. Because of the fast conversion of light and dark in the dynamic image, the higher the contrast, the easier it is for the human eyes to distinguish such a conversion process. The products with high contrast have more obvious advantages in detail performance, clarity, and high-speed moving objects performance in some dark scenes.

Projector brightness

The brightness of the projector is usually expressed by light out, which describes the ability of light source radiation to produce a visual response in unit time, and its unit is the lumen. There are two methods to measure brightness. 1. The average brightness of 9 intersections of "Tian" is multiplied by the length and width of projection. Test precondition projection distance is 2.4m; the projection size is 60 inches. 2. All black and all white contrast method. Select a black-and-white contrast image, measure, and calculate the black-and-white brightness difference times the projected area. When choosing the projector to determine the brightness index, we should not only consider the size of the used space but also consider the influence of the use of environment brightness. And the brightness selection should leave a margin, and the brightness will decrease after a period of use due to the influence of the bulb. It is recommended to choose 800-2000 lumens for the brightness of the home projector, 2000-4500 lumens for a small conference room or standard classroom, 3500-5000 lumens for medium conference room, and ladder classroom, and 5000 lumens for large conference room or auditorium. Of course, this is only a reference value. The accurate brightness should be calculated according to the actual ambient brightness and the size of the screen. For example, taking the classroom as an example, the average brightness is 500lux, and the formula is projector brightness = ambient brightness * 2 (Times) × screen length * screen width * 1.2 (loss coefficient) ≈ 3300. Therefore, it is necessary to fully consider the use environment and cost performance to select the appropriate brightness index.

Projector lens

Zoom ratio: the ratio of the maximum focal length to the minimum focal length, that is, the zoom ratio of the projection picture under a certain projection distance. This parameter does not affect the projection distance, etc.

Projection ratio: projection distance / screen width.

Lens focal length: distance from LCD panel to lens, unit: mm

Projection distance: distance from lens to screen, unit: mm

Panel size: LCD size in inches

Screen width: the effective width of the screen, in inches. It should be noted that the aspect ratio should be the same as that of the panel.

Calculate the projection distance according to the projector: projection distance = screen width * lens focal length/panel size

Projection distance = screen width (mm) × projection ratio

Calculate the appropriate projector according to the site conditions: lens focal length = projection distance * panel size/screen width

Precautions for projector installation:

1. Accurately calculate the projection distance, which is the distance between the lens and the screen; align the projector lens with the left and right center of the screen as much as possible; calculate the installation height of the projector according to the difference between the lens and the screen height (refer to the projector manual). Special attention shall be paid to this item when using a fixed focus projector, so as to avoid that the image cannot be full screen or over the screen. In case of slight error, fine adjustment can be made through the relative position between the projector and hanger.

2. During construction, pay attention to load-bearing reinforcement for the installation position of the projector and curtain according to the actual situation on site.

3. Try to select the projector hanger with excellent quality. The poor hanger is not perpendicular to the roof, and the installation screws cannot be tightened. Such problems affect construction efficiency.

4. If the electric screen is selected, a strong electric socket shall be reserved in the screen box, and the electric screen shall be equipped with remote control as far as possible to avoid affecting the appearance.

5. Do not power off the projector immediately after debugging. After the bulb cools and the fan stops rotating, cut off the power.

6. For projector cable, VGA, HDMI, and other cables can be reserved according to specific requirements, and network cable can be reserved according to specific functions of the projector.

(5) Store curves and load scanning software

Sometimes, in order to get the best color and scanning contrast, take a low-resolution scan first, open it in Photoshop then, and use Photoshop's curve function to improve color and contrast. Save the curve and load it back into the scanning software. The scanner will now use this color correction curve to create a better high-resolution file. If several images are scanned with a similar gamut range, the same curves can be used, and curves can also be stored frequently and loaded back as needed.

(6) Place the scanned object according to the required effect

In the actual process of using images, it is sometimes hoped that images with oblique effects can be obtained. Many designers often input images into computers through scanners, and then use professional image software to rotate the images to achieve the rotation effect. However, this process is very time-consuming, and the image quality will decline according to the angle of rotation. If you know in advance how the image is placed on the page, then using the protractor and the bottom edge of the original to place the original at a precise angle on the cylinder and the platen, you will get the highest quality image without rotating in the image processing software.

(7) Find the best scanning area on the glass plate

In order to obtain the best image scanning quality, find the best scanning area of the scanner, and then place the object to be scanned here to obtain the best and most fidelity image effect. The specific searching steps are as follows: first, set all controls of the scanner to automatic or silent state, select all areas, and then scan a blank, white or opaque sample with low resolution; then use Photoshop, a professional image processing software, to open the sample manuscript. Use the averaging command (Equalize menu item) in the software to process the sample manuscript. After processing, you can see where there are cracks, stripes and black spots on the scanner. You can print this document and cut out the best area (that is, the most stable area) to help place the image.

(8) Use transparent sheet fittings to obtain the best scanning effect

Many flatbed scanners are equipped with transparency fittings placed at the top of the scanner bed. In order to obtain the best scanning of transparent films or slides, remove the pictures from the rack and slide mounting rack and mount them on the glass scanning bed with the reverse side facing down (the reverse side is usually a rough surface). (9) Maximize that color gamut of the scanned image

In order to make full use of the 30-bit or 36-bit scanner to increase the color range, the scanner software (such as FotoTune of Agfa) or other company's software should be used to adjust the color as much as possible. Because Photoshop software is limited to 24-bit images, images may be inserted in the widest color gamut range.

(10) Scan printed matter with no screen printing technology

When scanning printed matter, there will be screen flowers in the continuous tone of the image. If the scanner does not have a screen removal function, try to find the resolution that minimizes the screen size. Often, the same or double resolution of the screen line of printed matter may work. Once you get a fairly good scan, use Photoshop as a Gaussian Blur filter (with a setting of less than 1 pixel) to slightly soften the mesh until you cannot see it. Then use Unsharp Mask to sharpen the image back. Scanning can also be improved by slightly rotating the image because the continuously adjusted screen angle is changed. For black-and-white images, the rotation of 45 degrees is just right. For CMYK images, experiments will be required.
