Finally, the brightness required in the specification can be achieved by adjusting the current value. For the brightness, it is not the higher the better, and appropriateness is enough.

(2) wavelength

Led full-color display is composed of red, green and blue LEDs. Each color is measured by wavelength. The color of the display is closely related to this wavelength. The average wavelengths of red, green and blue LEDs determine the dynamic color gamut range of LED full-color display. Generally speaking, the wavelength of red LED is about 625nm, green is about 525nm and blue is about 470nm. LED full color display of high quality should have a wide range of color gamut.

(3) Consistency

①   Brightness Consistency

The brightness consistency of LED full-color display depends on the brightness consistency of LED devices. Generally, it is required that the maximum and minimum luminance ratio of each color of LED device shall not be higher than 1.3, and then the luminance difference between two adjacent LEDs of the same color shall be less than 10% according to the scientific PCB lamp insertion mode.

②   Chromaticity Consistency

The LED devices that make up the LED full-color display screen all need a certain wavelength range. If the wavelength range is too wide, it will affect the color consistency of the display screen. Generally speaking, the wavelength range of red, green and blue is required to be within 5nm.

③   Angle Consistency

Led full-color display screen is composed of LED devices with angles. The consistency of angles of LED devices will seriously affect the consistency of brightness and chroma of different angles of display screen. The consistency of red, green and blue brightness curves of LED devices (especially elliptical lights) with the change of viewing angle also seriously affects the consistency of brightness and chromaticity of different angles of the display screen. Among all the parameters of full-color display screen, this parameter is the most difficult to achieve. The difference of high-grade led full-color display is mainly due to this.

(4) Power Consumption

LED is a very energy-saving light-emitting device. The power consumption of LED devices determines the power consumption of LED full-color display. Taking P20 full-color outdoor display as an example, its average power consumption is about 250W per square meter in the video playing state. For some 24-hour broadcast advertisers, because of the large area and long playing time, power consumption is an indicator of their concern. (5) Perspective

(7) Attenuation Characteristics

After working for a long time, the LED full-color display screen will appear the phenomenon that the brightness drops and the color of the LED screen is inconsistent, which is mainly caused by the brightness decay of LED devices. The attenuation of LED brightness will reduce the brightness of the whole screen. The inconsistent attenuation amplitude of red, green, blue LED brightness will cause LED display color inconsistency, that is the phenomenon of the blurred display what we often say. LED device with high quality can control the brightness attenuation amplitude well. According to the standard of lighting 20mA at room temperature for 1000 hours, the red attenuation should be less than 2%, and the blue and green attenuation should be less than 10%. Therefore, the blue and green LEDs should not use 20mA current as much as possible when designing the display screen, and it is better to use only 70% to 80% of the rated current.

Besides the related characteristics of the red, green and blue LEDs, the attenuation characteristics are affected by the current used, PCB heat dissipation design, and the ambient temperature of the display screen.

(8) Size

The size of LED device affects the pixel distance of LED full-color display screen, that is, the resolution. The oval lamp of 5mm is mainly used for outdoor display screen above p16, The oval lamp of 3mm is mainly used for outdoor display screen of p12.5, p12 and P10, and 3528 patch LED is mainly used for indoor display screen of P6 and P8, and 5050 patch LED is mainly used for semi outdoor display screen such as p16 and p12.5. On the premise of constant point spacing, the size of LED devices increases, which can increase the display area and reduce the particle sense. LED Gray Level of LED Display

Led gray level can also be called LED brightness. Gray level, also known as half tone, is mainly used to transfer pictures. There are three ways to transfer pictures: level 16, level 32 and level 64. It uses matrix processing to process the pixels of files into level 16, level 32 and level 64, so that the transferred pictures are clearer. Whether it is monochrome, bicolor or tricolor screen, in order to display image or animation, it is necessary to adjust the gray level of each LED light-emitting pixel, and the fine level of adjustment is what we usually call gray level.

Two Ways to Control the Gray Level of LED

One is to change the current flowing, the other is pulse width modulation. 1. Change the current flowing through the LED. Generally, the continuous working current of LED tube is about 20mA. Except for the saturation of red LED, the gray level of other LEDs is basically proportional to the current flowing through them. Another method is to use the visual inertia of human eyes to realize the gray level control by means of pulse width modulation, i.e. to periodically change the light pulse width (i.e. duty cycle). As long as the cycle of repeated lighting is short enough (i.e. refresh frequency rate is high enough), the human eye can't feel the flicker of the luminous pixels. Because pulse width modulation is more suitable for digital control, it is widely used in computer to provide LED display content today, and almost all LED screen use pulse width modulation to control the gray level. LED control system is usually composed of three parts: main control box, scanning board and display control device.

The main control box obtains the luminance data of one screen pixel from the display card of the computer, and then redistributes it to several scanning boards. Each scanning board is responsible for controlling several rows (columns) on the LED screen, and the display and control signals of each row (column) are transmitted in serial mode.

Two Ways of Serial Transmission of Display Control Signals

  1. One is to control the gray level of each pixel point on the scanning board. The scanning board decomposes the gray value of each row of pixels from the control box (i.e. pulse width modulation), and then transmits the opening signal of each row of LED in the form of pulse (lit to 1, not lit to 0) to the corresponding LED in line serial mode to control whether it is lit. In this way, fewer devices are used, but the amount of serial transmission data is large, because each pixel needs 16 pulses under 16 levels of gray, and 256 pulses are needed under 256 levels of gray in a cycle of repeated lighting. Because of the limitation of device working frequency, generally only 16 levels of gray can be achieved for LED screen.
  2. One is pulse width modulation. The scanning board serial transmission content is not each LED switch signal but an 8-bit binary gray value. Each LED has its own pulse width modulator to control the lighting time. In this way, in a period of repeated illumination, only four pulses are needed for each pixel at 16 levels of gray, and only eight pulses are needed at 256 levels of gray, which greatly reduces the serial transmission frequency. The History of LED Video Walls

We' re going to crash through a lot of information, so strap in. You’ve probably seen LED screen walls in many locations, from museums and concerts to TV studios. They’re a part of our daily lives and elicit a sense of excitement and wonder whenever we encounter them. But how did they come to be?

Let' s dig in. The first LEDs (or light-emitting diodes) were made in the 60s, and for the next decade only came in red. This is due to the compounds in their construction. At first, LEDs were only used in professional laboratory equipment, since they cost $200 to make.

In 1971, one of the first consumer products to come out with LED technology was a pocket calculator—priced at $400. That’s a little expensive when you consider that it didn’t even do algebra! If you’re a watch collector, you may have come across the famous Pulsar LED watch—the first watch to tell the time with LEDs which came out in 1972. It was also pretty expensive, coming in at $2,100.

A few other things happened in the 70s: the cost of red LEDs was reduced through manufacturing techniques to 5 cents, the first yellow LED was invented, and the first violet LED was created (it would lead to the creation of blue in the 90s).

White light: the breakthrough

In 1993, blue LEDs were given a yellow phosphor coating to create white light. This was a breakthrough. LEDs went from being used as indicators like traffic and car lights to be used as light sources. They use less power and last longer than incandescent lights so flashlights were the first consumer items to switch over to using LEDs. Today, it’s hard to find a flashlight that doesn’t use them.

Fast forward a bit to 1999 and we find Microsoft releasing the first optical mouse. This was a mouse that didn’t rely on a roller ball anymore but used an LED with light sensors instead to track its position. More fun facts about LED history can be found in this article by Wired. But enough about gadgets. What we care about are the advanced LED display that are in use today.

If you think back to a large screen you’ve seen in an earlier decade, you might think of a JumboTron. This was an enormous screen made by Sony that has been used in arenas and even in Times Square. The final model was made using LEDs, but it didn’t start out that way. At the time of its invention, LED’s only came in two colors, making them unusable for color video.

The JumboTron’s resolution was also poorer than VHS, at 240×192 pixels. That’s 46,080 pixels in it’s a huge screen, which was 30 feet diagonal. Compare that to our AmFlex Pro-1.2 which has 640,000 pixels per square meter, an area which is a fraction of the size of the Jumbotron.

LEDs have replaced older technologies for use in large screens—technologies such as CRT (cathode ray tubes) which the original JumboTrons used. Today, you can see LED screens in an almost endless array of sizes and shapes, both flat and curved into three dimensions.

What is the pixel pitch?

No crash-course on LED screens would be complete without talking technical jargon. You might have noticed the term “pixel pitch” being used on our site. Pixel pitch is the measurement from the center of one LED/cluster to the center of the next LED/cluster. Modern scoreboard-style displays have anywhere from a 6mm to 10mm pixel pitch. This makes them good for viewing from a distance, but if you went up close you’d see the pixels.

Our AmFlex Pro modules come in 1.2, 1.6, 1.9 and 2.5 mm pixel pitch. Generally, the smaller the pitch, the closer you can stand to the screen before seeing pixels. It’s important to consider what application you need the screen for. Will the screen be high up, meant to be viewed from some distance? Then a larger pixel pitch may work fine. How about if you have a screen right at the entrance to a store, where people walk within a few feet? That would be a situation for a smaller pixel pitch.
