  1. Generation Mechanism of Static Electricity

In general, static electricity is generated by friction or induction.

Friction static electricity is caused by the movement of electric charge in the process of contact friction or separation of two objects. The static electricity left by the friction between the conductors is usually relatively weak, which is due to the strong conductivity of the conductor. The ions generated by the friction will move together and neutralize quickly in the friction process and at the end. After the insulator is rubbed, it may produce high electrostatic voltage, but the charge is very small. This is due to the physical structure of the insulator itself. In the molecular structure of insulator, it is very difficult for electrons to move freely away from the binding of atomic nucleus, so only a small amount of molecules or atoms can be ionized as a result of friction. 

Induced static electricity is an electric field formed by the movement of electrons in an object under the action of electromagnetic field. Generally, induced static electricity can only be generated on the conductor. The effect of space electromagnetic field on insulator can be ignored. 

  1. Electrostatic Discharge Mechanism

The 220V city electricity can kill people, but people can't kill people with thousands of volts on the body. What's the reason?   1. Electrostatic Hazards to Electronic Components

Static electricity will do harm to LED. It's not the only "patent" of LED, but also the common diode and triode made of silicon materials. Even buildings, trees and animals can be damaged by static electricity.

So, how does static electricity damage electronic components? I don't want to say something irrelevant, and just talk about semiconductor devices, and it's limited to diode, triode, IC, LED. 

The damage of electricity to semiconductor components is ultimately the participation of current. Under the action of current, the device is damaged by heat. To have current, there must be voltage. However, the semiconductor diode has a PN junction. Whether it is forward or reverse, the PN junction will have a voltage range of blocking current. The forward barrier is low, while the reverse barrier is much higher. In a circuit, where the resistance is high, the voltage is concentrated. However, when the voltage is applied forward to the LED and the external voltage is less than the threshold voltage of the diode (the size corresponds to the material band gap width), there is no forward current, and the voltage is all applied to the PN junction. When the voltage is applied to the LED in reverse direction and the external voltage is less than the reverse breakdown voltage of the LED, the voltage is all applied to the PN junction. At this time, there is no voltage drop at the false soldering point of the LED, the bracket, the p-area and the n-area, because there is no current. When the PN junction breaks down, the external voltage will be shared by all the resistors on the circuit. Where the resistance is large, the voltage borne by which part is high. As far as LEDs are concerned, it is natural that the PN junction bears most of the voltage. The thermal power generated on the PN junction is the voltage drop on it multiplied by the current value. If the current value is not limited, too much heat will burn the PN junction, and the PN junction will lose its function and pass through.

Why is the IC afraid of static electricity? Because the area of each component in the IC is very small, and the parasitic capacitance of each component is very small (often the circuit function requires the parasitic capacitance to be very small). Therefore, a small amount of electrostatic charge will produce a high electrostatic voltage, and the power tolerance of each component is usually very small, so the electrostatic discharge will easily damage the IC. But ordinary discrete components, such as ordinary small power diodes and small power triodes, are not very afraid of static electricity, because their chip area is relatively large, and their parasitic capacitance is also relatively large, so it is not easy for general statics to accumulate high voltage on them. Due to the thin gate oxide and small parasitic capacitance, low-power MOS transistors are easy to be damaged by static electricity. Usually, they leave the factory after three electrodes are short circuited after packaging. In use, it is often required to remove the short route after welding. However, due to the large chip area of high-power MOS tubes, general static electricity will not damage them. So you will see that the three electrodes of the power MOS tube now have no short circuit protection (the early manufacturers still short them before leaving the factory).

Led actually has a diode in fact. Its area is very large compared with each component in IC. So the parasitic capacitance of LED is relatively large. Therefore, in general, static electricity can not damage the LED.

In general, the static electricity, especially the static electricity generated on the insulator, will have a high voltage, but the discharge charge is very small, and the duration of the discharge current is very short. However, the voltage of the static electricity induced on the conductor may not be very high, but the discharge current may be very large, and it is often a continuous current. This is very harmful to electronic components. 

  1. Why does Static Electricity Damage LED infrequently?

Let's first look at an experimental phenomenon. There is a piece of metal iron plate having 500V static electricity. Put the LED on the metal plate (pay attention to the method of putting to avoid the following problems). Do you think the LED will be damaged? Here, if the LED is to be damaged, it should usually be added with a voltage greater than its breakdown voltage, that is, the two electrodes of the LED should contact the metal plate at the same time and have a voltage greater than the breakdown voltage. The so-called 500V voltage is relative to the ground, so there is no voltage between the two electrodes of LED, so naturally there will be no damage. Unless you touch one electrode of the led to the iron plate, the other electrode connects to the ground or other conductors with conductors (hands or conductors without insulating gloves).

The above test results indicate that when LED is in electrostatic field, one electrode must contact with the electrostatic body, and the other electrode must contact with the ground or other conductors are damaged. In actual production and application, with the small volume of LED, there is little chance of such things, especially in batch. An accident is possible. For example, the LED is on the electrostatic body, and one electrode contacts the electrostatic body, and the other electrode is just suspended. At this time, someone touches the suspended electrode, which may damage the LED.

The above phenomenon tells us that the electrostatic problem can not be ignored. Electrostatic discharge is to have a conductive circuit, and there is no electrostatic damage. LED is a very energy-saving light-emitting device. The power consumption of LED devices determines the power consumption of LED full-color display. Taking P20 full-color outdoor display as an example, its average power consumption is about 250W per square meter in the video playing state. For some 24-hour broadcast advertisers, because of the large area and long playing time, power consumption is an indicator of their concern. The perspective of LED full-color display depends on the perspective of LED devices. At present, most of the outdoor display screens use elliptical led with horizontal viewing angle of 100 ° and vertical viewing angle of 50 °, while the indoor display screens use chip LED with horizontal and vertical viewing angle of 120 ° because of its particularity. An important index of LED full-color display screen is the blind spot rate of LED, which is completely determined by the quality of LED devices (excluding the influence of faulty welding, missing welding and poor contact in the production process of display screen). Before leaving the factory, LED devices shall be subject to various sampling tests, including normal temperature lighting, high temperature and humidity, cold and heat shock and other series tests, to ensure the stability, consistency and continuity of products. Generally speaking, the failure rate of high-quality LED devices for full-color display screen in 1000 hours should be less than 1 in 10000.

(7) Attenuation Characteristics

After working for a long time, the LED full-color display screen will appear the phenomenon that the brightness drops and the color of the LED screen is inconsistent, which is mainly caused by the brightness decay of LED devices. The attenuation of LED brightness will reduce the brightness of the whole screen. The inconsistent attenuation amplitude of red, green, blue LED brightness will cause LED display color inconsistency, that is the phenomenon of the blurred display what we often say. LED device with high quality can control the brightness attenuation amplitude well. According to the standard of lighting 20mA at room temperature for 1000 hours, the red attenuation should be less than 2%, and the blue and green attenuation should be less than 10%. Therefore, the blue and green LEDs should not use 20mA current as much as possible when designing the display screen, and it is better to use only 70% to 80% of the rated current.

Besides the related characteristics of the red, green and blue LEDs, the attenuation characteristics are affected by the current used, PCB heat dissipation design, and the ambient temperature of the display screen.

(8) Size

The size of LED device affects the pixel distance of LED full-color display screen, that is, the resolution. The oval lamp of 5mm is mainly used for outdoor display screen above p16, The oval lamp of 3mm is mainly used for outdoor display screen of p12.5, p12 and P10, and 3528 patch LED is mainly used for indoor display screen of P6 and P8, and 5050 patch LED is mainly used for semi outdoor display screen such as p16 and p12.5. On the premise of constant point spacing, the size of LED devices increases, which can increase the display area and reduce the particle sense. However, due to the decrease of black area, it will reduce the contrast; on the contrary, the size of LED decreases, which reduces the display area, increases the particle sense, the black area and the contrast.

(9) Life Expectancy

The theoretical life of LED device is one hundred thousand hours, which is much longer than the working life of other parts of LED full color display screen. Therefore, as long as the quality of LED device is guaranteed, the working current is appropriate, the PCB heat dissipation design is reasonable, and the production process of display screen is rigorous, LED device will be one of the most durable parts in the display screen.

LED device is the most important component of LED full-color display screen. Its performance parameters play a decisive role in the performance parameters of the display screen, and its cost also accounts for half of the total cost of the display screen. LED Gray Level of LED Display

Led gray level can also be called LED brightness. Gray level, also known as half tone, is mainly used to transfer pictures. There are three ways to transfer pictures: level 16, level 32 and level 64. It uses matrix processing to process the pixels of files into level 16, level 32 and level 64, so that the transferred pictures are clearer. Whether it is monochrome, bicolor or tricolor screen, in order to display image or animation, it is necessary to adjust the gray level of each LED light-emitting pixel, and the fine level of adjustment is what we usually call gray level.

Two Ways to Control the Gray Level of LED

One is to change the current flowing, the other is pulse width modulation. 1. Change the current flowing through the LED. Generally, the continuous working current of LED tube is about 20mA. Except for the saturation of red LED, the gray level of other LEDs is basically proportional to the current flowing through them. Another method is to use the visual inertia of human eyes to realize the gray level control by means of pulse width modulation, i.e. to periodically change the light pulse width (i.e. duty cycle). As long as the cycle of repeated lighting is short enough (i.e. refresh frequency rate is high enough), the human eye can't feel the flicker of the luminous pixels. Because pulse width modulation is more suitable for digital control, it is widely used in computer to provide LED display content today, and almost all LED screen use pulse width modulation to control the gray level. LED control system is usually composed of three parts: main control box, scanning board and display control device.

The main control box obtains the luminance data of one screen pixel from the display card of the computer, and then redistributes it to several scanning boards. Each scanning board is responsible for controlling several rows (columns) on the LED screen, and the display and control signals of each row (column) are transmitted in serial mode.

Two Ways of Serial Transmission of Display Control Signals

  1. One is to control the gray level of each pixel point on the scanning board. The scanning board decomposes the gray value of each row of pixels from the control box (i.e. pulse width modulation), and then transmits the opening signal of each row of LED in the form of pulse (lit to 1, not lit to 0) to the corresponding LED in line serial mode to control whether it is lit. In this way, fewer devices are used, but the amount of serial transmission data is large, because each pixel needs 16 pulses under 16 levels of gray, and 256 pulses are needed under 256 levels of gray in a cycle of repeated lighting. Because of the limitation of device working frequency, generally only 16 levels of gray can be achieved for LED screen.
  2. One is pulse width modulation. The scanning board serial transmission content is not each LED switch signal but an 8-bit binary gray value. Each LED has its own pulse width modulator to control the lighting time. In this way, in a period of repeated illumination, only four pulses are needed for each pixel at 16 levels of gray, and only eight pulses are needed at 256 levels of gray, which greatly reduces the serial transmission frequency.
