Magnetic Assemblies

Magnetic assembly incorporates magnet alloy and non-magnet material, usually creating much more magnetic strength than using magnets alone, and achieving certain functional effects which magnets cannot perform independently. Various kinds of magnetic assemblies can be designed and customized to serve a wide range of applications for commercial and industrial use.

Magnetic assemblies are built around high-performance magnetic materials, ranging from a two-piece assembly to a complex one with a precision design. They can be designed with various magnetic materials—Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB), Samarium Cobalt, Alnico, and Ceramic Ferrite. Important considerations for selecting or designing assemblies are holding or break-away force, magnetic field strength, dimensional constraints in terms of volume or mass, operating temperature, environmental tolerance, manufacturing cost and etc. Accumulated knowledge and expertise in magnetic solution validation, prototype construction, and empirical practice is key to delivering satisfying results to our customers.

Common applications of magnetic assembly include:

- Mounting Magnets

- Magnetic Coupling

- Pump couplings

- Torque and Linear Couplers

- Radial ring splicing assembly

- Halbach Arrays

- Plane rotor assembly

- Laminated magnetic steel assembly

Grades

The Grade of a magnet generally indicates how "strong" a magnet material is, which is measured by the Maximum Energy Product. The energy product is commonly specified in units of Gauss Oersted. The higher the grade the "stronger" the magnet. The grade also tells the temperature rating of a magnet material. Neodymium magnets have different heat tolerances which determine their maximum working temperature. As the heat tolerance increases the maximum available flux density decreases.

Magnetic Properties of Sintered Neodymium Magnet

Notes:

  1. The above-mentioned data of magnetic parameters and physical properties are given at room temperature(20℃±2).
  2. The maximum service temperature of magnet is changeable due to the ratio of length and diameter, coating and environmental factors

Surface Treatment

As Neodymium magnet is prone to corrosion, it is usually preferable for the magnet to be coated for protection. Among a variety of options for coatings, nickel and nickel-copper-nickel are the most commonly used, making the magnet more corrosion resistant and durable.

Magnetization Orientations

Magnets can be delivered magnetized and un-magnetized. Some production methods require the magnets being incorporated into assemblies in a un-magnetized state and magnetized later once the assembly is completed. There are various magnetic orientations available for different shapes of magnets.

Magnetic Materials

Magnetic materials can produce magnetic fields, which generate forces attracting or repelling ferromagnetic materials and other magnets. Magnetic materials can be divided into soft and hard magnets. Soft magnets are those materials easy to magnetize and demagnetize, while hard magnets are difficult to do so and retain strong magnetism after the removal of applied magnetic field. Hard magnets are also called permanent magnets, which include Neodymium magnets, SmCo magnets, AlNiCo magnets and Ferrite magnets. As neodymium and samarium are rare earth elements, Neodymium magnets and SmCo magnets form rare earth permanent magnets.

Magnetic materials exist in nature in a fascinating way as the earth we live on is a huge magnet itself. Ongoing research and innovation in the field has advanced the developments of a variety of magnetic materials, which play an increasingly important role in our modern life and industrial world. The applications of magnetic materials cover a broad span of areas, such as aerospace, transportation, information technology, industrial automation, consumer electronics, medical devices and clean energy.

Sintered Neodymium Magnets

Sintered neodymium magnet is the strongest magnetic material commercially available today. It is largely made of alloy of neodymium, iron and boron, and the chemical formula is Nd2Fe14B. Sintered NdFeB neodymium magnet exhibits high magnetic energy product in small size with high coercive forces. Examples of applications include permanent magnet motors, loudspeakers, magnetic separators, wind power generators, computer hard drive, and MRI devices.

Hot Pressed Neodymium Magnets

Hot pressed neodymium magnets include hot-pressed isotropic NdFeB magnets and hot-extruded anisotropic NdFeB magnets, which have high magnetic energy product and high coercive forces with precise tolerance. The hot-extruded anisotropic NdFeB magnet is particular good for the manufacture of radial ring magnets of small size with high magnetic performance requirements.

Bonded Neodymium Magnets

Bonded neodymium magnets can be pressed or extruded in complex forms, and magnetized into different patterns with multiple poles. It gives greater flexibility over shapes can be made and enables high precision for small sizes. Typical applications include sensors, brushless DC motors, stepper motors and actuators.

SmCo Magnets

Samarium cobalt magnets exist in two alloy varieties, SmCo5 being the original and Sm2Co17 being the more commonly used. Samarium cobalt magnets have excellent magnetic stability, very low temperature coefficient, and superior corrosion resistance. It is often used in high temperature applications and poor working environments with high magnetic performance requirements.

AlNiCo Magnets

AlNiCo magnets are manufactured by either casting or sintering process. Aluminum nickel cobalt magnet is the permanent magnet material with the highest curie temperature. Cast magnet can be produced in complex shapes with low cost.  AlNiCo magnet has low coercive force, and is easily demagnetized if not handled properly.

Ferrite Magnets

Ferrite magnets can be produced through sintering and injection molding. They have good resistance to demagnetization, and enjoy cost advantage with relatively low magnetic performance. Injection molded ferrite magnets incur higher tooling cost, and can be made into intricate shapes with tight tolerances. Ferrite magnets are widely used in motors, consumer electronics, household appliances, information and communication products, and consumer goods.

Mounting Magnets

Mounting magnets are comprised of powerful permanent magnets set inside steel cups or channels with countersunk holes or threaded features for holding applications. The steel structure redirects the magnetic field from the back-side of the magnet, making it much more stronger in terms of pull force, and protects the magnetic material from damage during use. Commonly used mounting magnets include Hook Magnets, Threaded Magnets, Countersunk/Counterbore Pot Magnets, Channel Magnets and Rubber Coated Magnets.

Mounting Magnets can double the strength of which you get with the magnet alone, as the steel cup attracting to it is magnetized by the magnet, giving much more pull force. The pull force numbers we list for each product is the force required to pull the mounting magnet straight away from a steel surface.

In fact, how much force a mounting magnet can hold depends on a few factors. When loading the magnet in a different orientation, for example, vertically stuck onto a wall, the weight it can hold up is usually lower than the listed pull force number. Moreover, the friction between the surfaces, the shape of what is being held up, and other factors also contribute to differences of the results.

Strong mounting magnets are often used as fishing magnets to retrieve objects that are lost underwater with magnetic parts or steel components. Mounting magnets with different features, such as hook, threaded and countersunk, can be widely used for holding, hanging, and attaching objects in different projects.
