Seat Pleasant, MD, The World's First Authentic Small Smart City, hosts a Smart Cities Week Workshop and launches Smart Street Lights program with global partners, bringing cutting-edge technology to the city of 4,800

Seat Pleasant, MD: Today, the City of Seat Pleasant, located on the Maryland border of Washington, DC, hosted an educational workshop and live demonstration of its Smart City assets. Among those in attendance included Smart Cities Week conference attendees interested in learning about Seat Pleasant’s Small Smart City Process, a system that small municipalities can easily adopt to create a citizen-centric smart city with a focus on connectivity and data. In addition, the City of Seat Pleasant debuted its new Smart Street Lights Program and announced new partnerships with Verizon, AECOM, and Pepco.

Smart Cities Week is an annual gathering hosted by the Smart Cities Council that brings together partners, cities and supporting stakeholders in order to accelerate smart cities' action and investment in cities, towns, and regions across the world. This year’s Smart Cities Week D.C. conference is taking place at National Harbor, starting today, September 30th through October 2nd, and will be delivering structured dialogue, peer networking and educational content focused on the conference’s theme: Smart Infrastructure: Equitable Communities. This year’s conference introduces a new mobile workshop series meant to take conference attendees out of the classroom and into the communities around the Washington DC region, to visit some of the region’s cutting-edge smart city projects, including Seat Pleasant, A Smart City of Excellence, and the World’s First Authentic Small Smart City.

Visitors to Seat Pleasant were taken through an educational workshop that defined a practical approach and process to smart city transformation that any municipality, regardless of size, can take to begin their own smart city transformation. In addition, visitors were shown live demonstrations of the city’s Smart Systems, including the Seat Pleasant Police Department’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Unit and Mobile Command Bus, as well as taken to a visit of the City’s Command Center where all city operations come together in a single system coined “the shared services hub.”

At the conclusion of the Smart Cities Workshop, the City of Seat Pleasant hosted a press conference to commemorate the visit, as well as to debut its Smart Street Lights program in partnership with Pepco, AECOM and Verizon. In attendance were distinguished members of each of those organizations, including, but not limited to Adam Beck, Chairman for Smart Cities Week, Tami Watkins, the Government & Public Affairs Manager from Pepco, Stefano Landi, Director & General Manager for Verizon Smart Communities, and from AECOM, Annika Moman, Senior VP for Energy and Michael House VP for Energy.

This public-private partnership will add tremendous value to the City of Seat Pleasant’s Smart City transformation by means of installation of Smart Lighting and Smart Video equipment for the City’s Smart Street Lights Program. The deployment will take place in key areas across the city and includes conversion of existing light pole lamps to LEDs along with lighting controls, a Smart traffic safety solution, and a Smart public safety solution.

The objectives of these solutions are to:

  • Achieve energy and maintenance savings by upgrading to Intelligent LED lighting.
  • Promote increased pedestrian safety through Intelligent Lighting features such as on-demand bright lighting, motion sensors, and remote-control capabilities.
  • Reduce traffic hazards at a high use intersection by analyzing traffic-related conflicts among motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
  • Provide Intelligent Video Analytics in support of the City’s Police Department public safety objectives.
  • Collect, process and analyze data to better inform City policies.

About Seat Pleasant: The City of Seat Pleasant: A Smart City of Excellence and the World’s First Authentic Small Smart City is a small Maryland city with approximately 4,800 residents. The City was founded in 1931 and began its digital transformation into a Smart City beginning in the Fall of 2016. Seat Pleasant is consistently recognized for its work to digitally transform the government to promote safety, resilience, efficient service delivery, and effective civic engagement, including from IBM and the Smart Cities Council. The City’s guiding principle that the citizen is the most important stakeholder, as well as the strategic partnerships it has forged with private, educational and public institutions, have been the catalyst behind the city’s successful and historic transformation. The city’s most recent public-private partnership with PEPCO, AECOM, and Verizon to install Smart Street Lights is expected to improve public safety and traffic management.
