What is phase contrast microscope?

A phase contrast microscope is a type of optical microscope that uses a specialized optical system to enhance the contrast of transparent, unstained specimens. It works by taking advantage of differences in the refractive index of different parts of a specimen, which can cause variations in the phase of light passing through the sample. In a phase contrast microscope, a special annular or phase plate is inserted into the optical pathway to convert the variations in phase into variations in intensity. This produces a high-contrast image of the sample, even though it may be nearly invisible under normal bright field illumination. Phase contrast microscopy is commonly used to observe living cells and other biological specimens that are difficult to stain or fix, such as mammalian cells, bacteria, and algae. It allows researchers to observe the internal structures of cells, such as organelles, without the need for staining or other invasive techniques. One of the advantages of phase contrast microscopy is that it is non-destructive, allowing researchers to observe living cells and other specimens in real-time. It is also relatively easy to use and requires minimal sample preparation, making it a valuable tool in many areas of biological research. Overall, phase contrast microscopy is a powerful tool for studying transparent, unstained specimens, allowing researchers to observe their internal structures and behaviors in great detail. It is widely used in biological and medical research, as well as in materials science and other fields. OPTO-EDU is one of the top professional supplier for microscope from China! What is stereo microscope?

A stereo microscope, also known as a dissecting microscope or a stereoscopic microscope, is a type of microscope that uses two separate optical paths to provide a three-dimensional view of the object being observed. Stereo microscopes are commonly used in biology, electronics, geology, and other fields where a three-dimensional view of the sample is needed.

The two optical paths in a stereo microscope use separate objective lenses to produce two slightly different images of the sample. These images are then combined in the eyepieces to produce a single three-dimensional image with depth perception.

Unlike compound microscopes, which are used to observe thin, transparent specimens, stereo microscopes are used to examine larger, opaque specimens that cannot be viewed under high magnification with a compound microscope. Stereo microscopes typically have lower magnification than compound microscopes, usually between 10x and 50x, but they provide a larger field of view and a wider depth of field, allowing the observer to see more of the sample at once.

Stereo microscopes come in a variety of designs, including binocular and trinocular models, with different levels of magnification and illumination options. They are widely used in biological research, manufacturing, quality control, and other fields where a three-dimensional view of the sample is essential.
