Flap discs offer right angle grinding versatility with a product that can grind and finish in a single operation. The abrasive flaps adhere to a rigid backing plate. It is the back plate that provides stability during operation with cooler cut, less vibration and smoother finish without gouging. Flap discs are well-suited to stock removal through blending applications. It is widely used in metal processing industries such as daily hardware, tank processing, automotive, train, and shipbuilding. It is mainly used to remove the oxide layer, rust, solder joints, etc. from the surface.

Sandpaper flap disc application is divided into two major fields according to the metal type. One field is ordinary metals, such as general steel, iron, and so on. In this application field, generally ordinary abrasive grains can meet the grinding requirements. The other field is High hardness metals, such as stainless steel, titanium alloys, etc. Due to their mental characteristics, difficult to grind, easy to burn, high metal viscosity, etc., ordinary abrasive grains are difficult to meet the requirements. We need to use some special abrasive grains, such as zirconium corundum, ceramic abrasives, etc.

Vulcanized fiber discs (commonly known as fiber discs) are round grinding wheels with a backing made of vulcanized fiber that is coated on one side with resin and abrasive grain. Fiber discs are fitted to suitable backing pads and used on angle grinders, predominantly for machining metal.

The safety requirements applicable to fiber discs and their backing pads are laid down in the EN 13743 standard. The maximum surface speed (maximum operating speed) for fiber discs is 80 m/s.

As they can be combined with a wide range of grain types and backing pad versions, fiber discs have an extensive scope of applications ranging from rough machining to finish grinding of surfaces. The benefits fiber discs offer over abrasive mop discs and grinding discs are the elasticity of the backing, resulting in excellent adaptability, a fine and uniform scratch pattern (compared to grinding discs) and, first and foremost, their more affordable price.

Their downsides in contrast with abrasive mop discs lie in their inferior service life and their relatively high sensitivity to moisture and temperature.
