Born in rural Virginia, Dr. Washington’s life journey is defined by resilience and purpose. After losing her biological mother at the age of three and being sent away from home at eleven during Prince Edward County’s five-year school shutdown, she experienced firsthand the impact of displacement and educational inequity. These formative experiences shaped her lifelong commitment to ensuring that no child feels unseen or unsupported.

Dr. Washington holds degrees in Elementary and Special Education, Counseling Psychology, M.LITT, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with advanced study at Glasgow, Harvard, and the London Roundtable. Her distinguished career includes service as a model teacher, Assistant Superintendent, tenured professor, and Coppin State University’s first female Vice President. She is also the author of several acclaimed works, including The AI Toolkit for Teachers Made Easy, Driven to Succeed, Determinada a Triunfar, and Aunt Hattie’s Cookbook.

At the heart of Dr. Washington’s life is her family. She is the proud mother of two accomplished daughters—one a physician and the other an attorney—and a devoted grandmother to Cameron and Reagan. Her parenting philosophy centers on presence, advocacy, and unconditional love, principles she lives out across generations.

Her passion for children extends far beyond the classroom. Dr. Washington founded Aunt Hattie’s Place (AHP), where she reared numerous foster boys with special needs, installing computer labs and creating individualized learning plans to support their growth. One of her foster sons, Wayne—who lived in her home and calls her “Mom”—is now an IT Specialist at Microsoft.

Believing deeply in education as a generational catalyst, she established the Aunt Hattie Scholarship Fund (AHSF) at Coppin State University to support foster youth aging out of care. Funded in part by proceeds from her books and speaking engagements, the scholarship enables recipients to attend college and live on campus.

A lifelong church servant since age sixteen, Dr. Washington has served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, usher, announcer, and volunteer. Today, she continues to mentor students, educators, parents, and former foster youth, guided by her belief that lifting even one child can transform an entire family line.
