Each December the church body joins together to present a celebration of Christ’s birth.  Thirty years of continual praise has come from children as young as 4 years old to adults who are 83 years old who are raising their voices, acting, working behind the scenes, or adding energy through choreography.  Innovative lighting, snow falling on the crowd, and Monks who have taken a vow of silence yet still find a way to present the “Hallelujah Chorus” all bring interest to the program.  Presented to the community each Christmas season, the Christmas Celebration has become a highlight for everyone involved.

Complimentary Tickets Available November 14, 2011.

  • Dec 9, 2011 at 2:30pm to Dec 11, 2011 at 6:00pm
  • Location: Riverdale Ministries
  • Description:

Presented annually for 25 years, The Living Christmas Tree is a spectacle of sight and sound! The performances feature unforgettable music and drama complemented by a pre-show outdoor live nativity. It has been described as "top-quality, affordable family entertainment at its finest."

The tree itself is a 30-foot-tall steel structure that holds an 80-person choir who stand on wooden platforms bolted to the framework. It weighs over 2 tons, is held together by more than 800 steel bolts, and is all decked out for Christmas with greenery and thousands of lights programmed to complement the music.

The star at the top of the tree is 4 feet tall and reaches to the ceiling of the auditorium.

After the tree is built, there's still more for our crew of volunteers to do, from staging and lighting for the drama to setting up for hot chocolate and cookies at our outdoor nativity.

Beyond all the fun facts and hard work, the Living Christmas Tree is much more than an engineering marvel or a musical

Samuels found fame on the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation's television series Oliver At Large, which was created by producer Calvin Butler and playwright Aston Cooke. In this series, Oliver played his alter ego Olivius Adams, aka Oliver. The series featured sketches from Oliver's exploits, often with his sidekick, Maffi. Several spin-off theatre pieces have been created for the Oliver character including Large Abroad, Oliver's Posse (1999), Oliver and Pinocchio (2001), and Oliver and the Genie (2002).

Oliver Samuels, known by most through his vastly popular television series, Oliver at Large, has combined a career in marketing with life on stage, touring every year between spring and summer before returning home for his executive offices at Mack D's-the Kingston-based company where he is a director and head of marketing and public relations.
