The flu shot is your best protection from the flu

Now's the time to get your flu shot. The flu shot is covered for people with Medicare from providers that accept Medicare or your Medicare plan. You can safely get a flu vaccine at your doctor's office, pharmacy, or other local provider.

Learn More

The flu can be very serious for people who are 65 years and older. A flu shot is your best protection from getting and spreading the virus. Getting the shot can help you stay healthy and, if you do get sick with the flu, your symptoms likely won't be as bad or last as long.

All places offering flu shots should be following CDC guidance to ensure you have a safe place to get vaccinated. This includes that patients wear a face covering and maintain social distance in areas like waiting rooms. Visit CDC.gov for more information on how to safely get your flu vaccine during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sincerely,

The Medicare Team

Hello Everyone,

Today's edition looks at three items.  Some key findings in each area:

  1. COVID deaths in the USA during the most recent week (August 9 - 15) remain at more than 1,000 per day and are well above the rates the country experienced during June and most of July.
  2. COVID death rates tend to be correlated with population density.  However, among the 37 Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) member nations, the USA ranks 7th in the per population COVID death rate but 27th in population density.
  3. COVID death rates per population were grouped into the four major US regions.  The Northeast region's death rate is by far the highest (3.75 times the remainder of the country's rate), but this region's population density is 3.69 times that of the rest of the nation.  Comparing these data to the OECD countries, every USA region's COVID death rate is far above where it would be expected relative to other countries based on population density rankings.

Attached is this week's edition of the 5 Slide Series.  These slides present the weekly progression of COVID deaths in the USA across the 23 weeks since the first death was reported.  The week ending August 1 was our seventh-worst week in terms of COVID deaths, and the fourth consecutive week where more deaths occurred than the previous week.

We also tabulated state-by-state deaths in each of the past five months.  The states are fairly evenly divided in terms of what their "highest death" month has been between three months:  April, May, and July.  No state experience their highest level of COVID deaths in either March or June.

Hello Everyone,

Today's edition of our 5 Slide Series is attached and frames how the USA's COVID death rate compares with other highly developed countries (our death rate is 78% higher). We also portray each state's weekly progression of COVID tests, cases, and deaths through the month of July. July has been a disappointing "step backwards" month in the USA overall and especially so in many states. Nationwide, we experienced nearly twice as many COVID deaths this past week as occurred during the first week of July.

Kindest regards,
