​Described as a "Real Renaissance Man," Lonnell Johnson provides a unique collage of experiences, having worked as a pharmacist, information analyst, editor, administrator and director of public relations, as well as university professor.

​

With a B.S. degree in Pharmacy from Purdue University, Johnson was drafted into the Army in 1967 and served as pharmacy instructor at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. This experience introduced him to the joys of classroom teaching, eventually leading to a Master’s degree in English from Emporia State University and ultimately a Ph.D. in English from Indiana University.

For 40 years he has taught on the university level in Kansas, Indiana, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Ohio. As a writer he has published articles on a variety of subjects, such as biblical research and African-American literature. He has also authored three collections of poetry: Ears Near to the Lips of God; Sacred Jazz: Music, Mood and Mind, and Stone upon Stone: Psalms of Remembrance. As a practicing poet and professor, Johnson has presented lectures on a variety of literary genres, including jazz, the blues, and spirituals, as well as readings of original works during Black History Month and other occasions.

In addition, Johnson has published a personal narrative Watch, Fight and Pray: My Personal Three-fold Strategy to Combat Prostate Cancer. Currently he is revising his testimony in light of a recent triumph in his in battle with cancer over the past 17 years. In sharing his testimony, Johnson also relates keys and principles to overcome adversity of any kind.

Currently Dr. Johnson serves as adjunct professor at Carolina College of Biblical Studies in Fayetteville, NC, where he recently also served an adjunct professor at Fayetteville State University, having previously served as Associate Professor from 1985-1994. In 2005 he retired as Professor of English at Otterbein University in Westerville, OH. In addition he has facilitated courses in written and oral communications at National College, University of Phoenix, Indiana Wesleyan University and Ohio Christian University.

Dr. Johnson also maintains a personal blog “Dr. J’s Apothecary Shoppe,” where he compounds “prescriptions to minister to the heart and soul.” He continues to explore ways to enhance his communication skills through teaching, writing and motivational speaking.
