Join University of Maryland Divine Nine (Pan-Hellenic Council) Alumni and their families for an up close and personal evening with performing artists and the founder of Step Afrika! on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. In celebration of over 15 years of performing and teaching around the world, Step Afrika! brings its high-energy performance of stepping, an art form born at African American fraternities and based in African traditions, to the Center’s stage. As the first professional company dedicated to stepping, Step Afrika’s intricate kicks, stomps and rhythms mixed with spoken word pound the floor and fill the air. Throughout their history, Step Afrika has also raised awareness of stepping’s connections to other cultural traditions. From Appalachia to South Africa, from gumboot to Zulu, they seek to build connections between people and to highlight the similarities in dance forms, lives and communities. Step Afrika!'s motto is “if we can dance together, then we can work together.” This special anniversary program features some of the company’s most celebrated works along with an amazing choral collaboration. This special evening with Divine Nine Alumni will begin with an 8:00 p.m. live performance followed by a "talk back" with the artists. At 9:30 p.m. you will be part of a small groups of guests invited to attend a private dessert reception in the Upper Pavilion to meet C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! founder A portion of the proceeds from tickets purchased through a block set aside for the Alumni Association Diversity Council will benefit the Divine Nine Emergency Tuition Assistance Fund.
