  • Supporting First-Generation College Students Through Parents and Families

  • Sep 30, 2020 from 8:00am to 9:30am
  • Location: Virtual/Zoom
  • Description:

    8476381071?profile=original

Research indicates that first-generation college students--college students whose parent(s) have not earned a bachelor's degree--face more disadvantages than their peers whose parent(s) have earned a college degree. One of these disadvantages is the lack of social capital--or access to information.

While working in higher education for nearly 10 years, I have discovered a solution--getting the information to the parents. When parents get the information needed to support their child's college goals the child is more likely to experience greater levels of success as a college student.

So if you are an overwhelmed parent or family member of a first-generation college student, through this class you will gain insight to assist your child in planning for and navigating the college process so that you can develop confidence in the plan for your child's college education and they can have a strengthened sense of community and support to persist to graduation.

Written by Elaine Hutchinson. Laughing In Spite Of is based on Rosalyn Morgan’s book “Laughing to Keep From Crying, This Alzheimer’s Thing is No Joke”. It is the story of the extreme agony and undying love of a daughter. It is the story of Rosalyn Morgan’s own and real life experience, caring for her mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The play, shares the feelings, the waves of emotions experienced as the fortunate one chosen to endure a journey through a tumultuous sea of frustration. The play portrays the dichotomy between the mother’s inability to understand what is happening to her, and the daughter’s lack of knowledge about Alzheimer’s and its progression. Having to maintain emotional sanity, and fighting to ‘stay above water’, Rosalyn yet finds humor in her experience, even as she copes with all that life heaps on her through the various stages of Alzheimer’s and its certain end.

The book and the play offer practical lessons and bring awareness to caregivers, family member
