25TH ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. PROGRAM Keynote Speaker: Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie The Smithsonian’s Martin Luther King Jr. Program was developed in 1987 under the auspices of the Secretary’s Cultural Education Committee. Drawing upon Dr. King’s ecumenical and social change philosophy, the program was developed to illuminate issues of contemporary concern consistent with the Smithsonian mandate “to increase and diffuse knowledge.” The Anacostia Community Museum continues the program today to show the realization of Dr. King’s vision in the lives of celebrated people whose life’s work demonstrates the same passion, principles, and compassion that Dr. King exemplified. This program helps to dispel ignorance of the struggles of everyday people of all walks of life, ethnic and religious backgrounds, economic status, and cultural traditions. It aids to further the museum’s current mission to challenge perceptions, broaden perspectives, generate new knowledge, and deepen understanding about the ever-changing concepts and realities of “community.”
