Are the people in your life adding value, multiplying your potential, subtracting your peace, or creating division? Discover what the Bible teaches about friendships, relationships, spiritual growth, and choosing the right circle.

Have you ever stopped to think about the people surrounding you? Your friends, coworkers, family members, business partners, and even the people you interact with on social media?

Here's a question that might change the way you look at your relationships:

If everyone in your life were a mathematical equation, would they be adding, multiplying, subtracting, or dividing?

Now, before you grab your calculator and start removing people from your contacts, there's something important to understand.

God never instructed us to treat people as disposable. However, the Bible repeatedly teaches us to exercise wisdom, recognize influences, establish healthy boundaries, and surround ourselves with people who encourage spiritual growth.

As Proverbs 27:17 (KJV) reminds us:

"Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."

Let's explore four mathematical operations that can teach us valuable biblical life lessons about relationships—and discover why the most important calculation might actually begin with ourselves.

➕ 1. ADDITION: Who Is Adding Value to Your Life?

Think about the people who encourage you when you're discouraged.

The friend who calls to check on you.

The person who prays with you when life becomes overwhelming.

The mentor who gives you honest advice, even when it's uncomfortable.

These individuals are adding something valuable to your life.

They may not have the money to solve your financial problems or the connections to open every door, but their presence makes a positive difference.

Biblical Principle: Encourage One Another

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (KJV) says:

"Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do."

The word edify means to build up.

Healthy relationships should contribute to your spiritual, emotional, and personal development.

Imagine telling a friend you've been rejected for a job opportunity.

One person responds, "Well, maybe you're just not qualified."

But another says, "Don't give up. Let's review your résumé, pray about it, and keep moving forward."

See the difference?

One response creates discouragement. The other adds encouragement, wisdom, and practical support.

Life Lesson: Surround yourself with people who add faith when you're discouraged, wisdom when you're confused, and encouragement when you're ready to quit.

✖️ 2. MULTIPLICATION: Who Helps You Grow Beyond Your Expectations?

Some relationships do more than add value.

They multiply your potential.

These are the individuals who recognize gifts and abilities you may not fully recognize in yourself.

They challenge you to think bigger, develop your talents, strengthen your faith, and pursue meaningful opportunities.

Perhaps you have an idea for a ministry, business, community outreach program, or creative project.

One person says, "That's nice."

But another says, "That's an excellent idea! Let me introduce you to someone who can help. I'll also show you how to get started."

That's multiplication!

Biblical Principle: Spiritual Multiplication

In 2 Timothy 2:2, the Apostle Paul instructs Timothy to pass along what he has learned to faithful people who will be able to teach others.

Notice the multiplication taking place.

Paul teaches Timothy.

Timothy teaches others.

Those individuals teach additional people.

One person's investment produces an expanding influence.

The same principle can apply to mentorship, leadership, ministry, education, and personal development.

God often uses relationships to help develop the abilities and opportunities He has entrusted to us.

Life Lesson: Appreciate the people who challenge you to grow, invest in your development, and help you use your gifts to make a positive difference.

And remember, multiplication isn't always about money, popularity, or success. Sometimes the greatest multiplication is increased wisdom, stronger faith, deeper compassion, and a greater ability to serve others.

➖ 3. SUBTRACTION: Who Is Constantly Draining Your Peace and Purpose?

Now here's where the math gets uncomfortable!

Have you ever been having a wonderful day until a particular person called?

Suddenly, your peace disappears.

Your motivation decreases.

Your attitude changes.

And somehow, a five-minute conversation becomes a two-hour discussion about everybody else's problems!

You hang up the phone thinking, "Lord, I need another prayer after that conversation!"

All humor aside, some relationships can develop unhealthy patterns that negatively affect your spiritual and emotional well-being.

These influences may involve constant negativity, pressure to compromise your values, repeated disrespect, manipulation, or discouragement.

Biblical Principle: Recognize Unhealthy Influences

1 Corinthians 15:33 (KJV) warns:

"Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners."

The people we consistently listen to and follow can influence our behavior, decisions, and character.

However, this scripture does not mean we should abandon someone simply because they're experiencing hardship.

Jesus demonstrated compassion toward people who were struggling, rejected, or misunderstood.

There's a difference between helping someone through a difficult season and repeatedly allowing destructive behavior to control your life.

Sometimes biblical wisdom requires setting boundaries.

You can love someone without agreeing with everything they do.

You can forgive someone without allowing repeated mistreatment.

You can pray for someone without participating in their harmful decisions.

Life Lesson: Protect your spiritual growth, peace, and purpose by recognizing unhealthy patterns and establishing boundaries rooted in wisdom and love.

➗ 4. DIVISION: Who Is Creating Conflict Instead of Unity?

Have you ever watched a peaceful gathering turn into an argument because someone started spreading gossip?

One person whispers, "Did you hear what she said about you?"

Another responds, "Wait until I tell you what he told me!"

Before you know it, people who were laughing together aren't even speaking.

Congratulations! Someone just turned fellowship into a mathematics problem!

Division can destroy trust, damage friendships, disrupt families, and weaken churches, workplaces, and communities.

Biblical Principle: Avoid Gossip and Division

Proverbs 16:28 (KJV) states:

"A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends."

Gossip, jealousy, manipulation, dishonesty, and unnecessary conflict can separate people who once trusted each other.

As followers of Christ, we should strive to become peacemakers rather than contributors to unnecessary division.

This doesn't mean ignoring wrongdoing or avoiding difficult conversations. Sometimes truth requires confronting problems.

The difference is whether our words and actions seek truth, accountability, reconciliation, and healing—or simply create more conflict.

Before repeating something negative about another person, ask yourself:

  • Is this information true?

  • Is sharing it necessary?

  • Am I helping resolve a problem or creating another one?

  • Would it be wiser to speak directly with the person involved?

Life Lesson: Don't allow gossip, jealousy, or unnecessary conflict to turn you into someone who divides relationships instead of strengthening them.

🪞 The Plot Twist: What Kind of Math Are YOU Doing in Someone Else's Life?

Now here's the part nobody saw coming.

After examining everyone around you, imagine God turning the mirror toward you.

You've identified the people who add to your life.

You've celebrated the people who multiply your potential.

You've recognized the influences that subtract from your peace.

And you've noticed the individuals who create division.

But there's one more question.

What are YOU doing in the lives of the people around you?

Are you adding encouragement or criticism?

Are you multiplying someone's confidence or discouraging their dreams?

Are you helping others grow spiritually or distracting them from their purpose?

Are you bringing people together or participating in gossip that pulls them apart?

Sometimes we're so busy evaluating everybody else's behavior that we forget to examine our own.

Jesus teaches in Matthew 7:3–5 about recognizing our own faults before focusing on the faults of others.

That biblical principle reminds us that genuine spiritual maturity begins with humility and self-examination.

Before asking God to change everyone around us, perhaps we should pray:

"Lord, help me become a better friend, family member, coworker, leader, and example of Your love."

Because the goal isn't simply to find better people.

The goal is also to become a better influence.

🙏 Five Practical Ways to Apply This Bible Life Lesson

1. Evaluate your closest influences. Consider whether your relationships consistently encourage wisdom, faith, accountability, and healthy personal development.

2. Appreciate people who build you up. Thank those who encourage, mentor, pray for, and support you.

3. Establish healthy boundaries. Recognize repeated destructive patterns without responding with bitterness, revenge, or unnecessary hostility.

4. Become a peacemaker. Refuse to spread gossip and look for opportunities to promote honest communication, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

5. Examine your own influence daily. Ask God to help your words, decisions, and actions strengthen the people around you.

📖 Final Bible Life Lesson: Check Your Circle, But Don't Forget to Check Yourself!

Life isn't always easy, and relationships aren't always simple.

Nobody adds value every single day.

Even the strongest friendships experience disagreements, misunderstandings, and difficult seasons.

But over time, the patterns of our relationships reveal their influence.

The Bible encourages us to pursue wisdom, practice love, exercise discernment, and develop relationships that help us grow closer to God.

So the next time you think about the people in your life, remember these four mathematical operations:

➕ ADDITION: Surround yourself with people who encourage faith, wisdom, and personal growth.

✖️ MULTIPLICATION: Appreciate people who help develop your gifts, strengthen your purpose, and expand your positive impact.

➖ SUBTRACTION: Recognize unhealthy influences and establish boundaries that protect your spiritual and emotional well-being.

➗ DIVISION: Avoid gossip, jealousy, and destructive conflict while pursuing truth, peace, and reconciliation.

And above all, remember Proverbs 27:17:

"Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."

The people around you matter. But the person you're becoming matters just as much.

💬 Let's Start a Conversation!

Here's today's challenge:

If someone evaluated the influence YOU have on their life, which mathematical symbol would they choose?

➕ ADDITION — You encourage and strengthen others.

✖️ MULTIPLICATION — You help others grow and develop their gifts.

➖ SUBTRACTION — You recognize that some habits or attitudes need to change.

➗ DIVISION — You need to work on promoting peace and unity.
