City of Hyattsville, Maryland Higher Education and Youth Camp Scholarships

The City of Hyattsville offers two scholarship programs for youth and young adults:

  • Children and Youth Camp Scholarships: available to support families who need financial assistance for their children to participate in the City's youth camp programs.
  • Educational Path Scholarship: available to support Hyattsville high school seniors and graduates who are pursuing post-secondary education.

Children and Youth Camp Scholarships

The Hyattsville Children and Youth Camp scholarship pilot program is intended for families and individuals who need financial assistance to participate in the City’s camps.

The scholarship is open to Hyattsville residents in grades K-5. You must reside in the incorporated City of Hyattsville and demonstrate financial need to apply. Scholarship awards are valid until August 16, 2024.

Scholarship Awards

Scholarships are available to cover the following camps in 2024. Applicants can select ONE of the following options:

  • The 2024 Spring Break Camp, including extended hour coverage 
  • Mini- Camps: Day Camps and Early Dismissal Camps for days when PGCPS schools are closed 
  • Hyattsville’s Night Owls Program 
  • 4 Weeks of the 2024 Summer Camp, including extended hour coverage

Eligibility

  • Parents or guardians must submit applications for their Kindergarten – 5th grade dependents.
  • Applicants must meet criteria to demonstrate financial need either as a participant of a federal or state assistance program, income, or financial hardship; see below for requirements.
  • Applicants must be residents of the incorporated City of Hyattsville, Maryland; verify residency .

Application Requirements 

The candidate must submit an online application to include:

  • Two (2) proofs of address (current utility bills, lease agreements, insurance statements, bank statements, voter registration, government benefits statement, or mortgage deed)
  • Birth Certificate of the child/ children (showing parents name)
  • Valid government-issued photo ID (passport, driver’s license, state of Maryland identification, school ID, etc.) for the applicant (parent or guardian) 
  • Proof of Federal or State program eligibility (Documentation supporting enrollment in federal or state assistance programs; checklist of programs is listed on the application), OR
  • Proof of income eligibility (Copy of most recent household W-2s, Copy of most recent household tax returns), OR
  • Proof of hardship Eligibility (applicant must describe hardship and provide documentation to support their description)

Paper versions of the application are available at the Hyattsville City Building, 4310 Gallatin Street. (Open Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5 PM)

Application Deadline: February 2, 2024

Award notification will be provided between February 12, 2024, and February 16th, 2024

Educational Path Scholarship Program

The Educational Path Scholarship supports Hyattsville high school seniors and graduates pursuing post-secondary education and career paths with funding for tuition, books, or other school materials.

Scholarship Awards

  • Scholarships are awarded in amounts of $1,000, $1,500, $2,500, and $3,500
  • Funds can be used towards tuition, books, and other school materials

Eligibility

  • Candidates must be High School Seniors, High School Graduates, or GED Diploma Recipients
  • Candidates must be residents of the City of Hyattsville, Maryland; verify residency here
  • Candidate must currently have a 2.0 or higher weighted average GPA 
  • Candidate must be enrolled and/or accepted into a college, university, or trade school at the time of applying

Application Requirements

The candidate must submit an online application, two (2) personal statement essays, two (2) references, and the documentation requested below:

  • Two proofs of address (utility bills, lease agreements, or mortgage deed)
  • Proof of identification (passport, driver’s license, state of Maryland identification, school ID, etc.)
  • High school transcripts (current high school students) or a high school diploma (graduates)
  • College/university acceptance letter 
  • Documentation of all other scholarships/ grants awarded to the applicant
  • A letter or resume that shows the applicant's involvement in school and/or community activities
  • Two letters of recommendation
