ABC Channel 8 News: Mentoring to Manhood program looks for more volunteers to hepl boys.

Mentoring to Manhood is a very special program in Prince George's County. And they need more men to volunteer to help boys learn and grow.

Jabare Norris talks about the Mentoring to Manhood program in Prince George's County.

This week, County Executive Rushern Baker shared his own childhood struggles with dozens of boys in the program.

One of the participants is Jabare Norris, an 8th grader at Greenbelt Middle School.

Raised by a single mother, Norris says the mentors teach him what his mother can't.

"She's doing the best she can. She put me in this group to better myself," says Norris.

He says being in the program has helped his grades and his home life.

"There's less stress in the house between me and my brother and my mom," Norris says. "It's just been great."

The group meets weekly for tutoring and mentoring.

"What we try to do is fill that void," says Rob Howz, program director. "We don't try to become the father, or become the mother, we just to fill the void."

"I moved around a lot," Baker says after talking with the boys. "That's what I was saying, it's so important, that mentoring part and what you're getting was so important to me in my life."

To Jabare Norris, it's not just important, it's eye opening.

"Here I took away, that you just gotta work hard to become successful," Norris says.

Mentoring to Manhood is looking for more mentors. Next week, the group is holding a recruitment fair on April 7th.

Celebrity Fatherhood Panel at Greater Mount Calvary Church To Be Hosted by Former Washington Wizard Etan Thomas

Former Washington Wizards player Etan Thomas is teaming up with some other big names to stress the importance of fatherhood.

Thomas played 11 successful seasons in the NBA, including 8 with the Washington Wizards, but he says the career he’s most proud of is his role as a father to three young children.

Thomas is the product of a single-parent home, but he says he never used that as a negative. Rather, he says it’s a story he shares in his new book, Fatherhood.

“Everybody has a choice, and that’s the main thing that I want to stress. No matter what situation you come from you still always have a choice,” he said.

Thomas is holding a panel discussion Thursday night in Northeast, and he’s enlisted some of the biggest names in the community, including Washington Wizards Players Trevor Ariza & Aj Price; TV/Radio Personality Russ Parr; Mega Pastor John Jenkins of First Baptist Church of Glenarden; TV One's Roland Martin; Chick Hernandez of Comcast Sports, Radio/TV Personality "Big Tigger", Pastor Johnny Parker, Poets - Quadir Lateef, 13 of Nazereth, & Pages d Matam.

“The absence of a father in the life of a child has an impact far beyond what we can explain,” said Pastor John K. Jenkins.

As a father of six, Pastor Jenkins says it’s good, both for culture and society, for all fathers to participate in the lives of their children. He says it’s a message he shares with his own congregation and one he hopes to share with the D.C. community as well.

“Important just to be there,” Pastor Jenkins said. “Be there, be involved, be seen, be present.”
